# The git status pill

> The pill in the top bar shows where your change is on its way to the codebase. Pressing it does the next step.

The pill in the top bar always names the **next step** for your change. Press it, and the agent does that step in the chat, where you can watch.

Pressing the pill doesn't run git itself. It sends the agent a plain request, like "Open a pull request for this branch against main". With Claude, anything that reaches GitHub still asks for your approval first.

If you press the pill while the agent is working, the step waits its turn. The pill says **Queued**, and the step runs when the agent finishes. To cancel it, hover over the pill and choose **Take Back**.

While a step runs, the pill says what's happening, such as **Creating PR** or **Pushing**.

## A typical journey

<Steps>
  <Step title="Connect GitHub">
    Only needed once. See [Create a pull request](/handoff/create-a-pull-request#connect-github-once).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create PR">
    Your change is on its own branch. To open a pull request, press the pill.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Checks Running">
    Your team's automated checks are running on the pull request.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ready to Merge">
    Checks passed. Pressing opens the pull request on GitHub. Your team decides who merges. Often that's an engineer.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Merged">
    Your change is in the codebase.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Every state

| Pill says | What it means | Pressing it asks the agent to |
| - | - | - |
| Local Only | This project isn't on GitHub, so there's nowhere to send changes | Nothing. Ask an engineer to put the repo on GitHub |
| Connect GitHub | Onlook can't use your GitHub account yet | Sign you in to GitHub (see [Connect GitHub once](/handoff/create-a-pull-request#connect-github-once)) |
| No Access | Your GitHub account can't access this repo | Nothing. Ask a repo owner for access |
| Create PR | Your branch has no pull request yet | Open a pull request against your main branch |
| Push to Main | Your branch has no pull request, and you've chosen to push instead | Push your branch to GitHub, without a pull request |
| Upload Changes | You've made changes since the pull request was opened | Commit and push them to the pull request |
| Download Changes | Main has moved ahead of your branch | Update your branch from main |
| Checks Running | Automated checks are running | Nothing. Wait for the checks to finish |
| Fix Checks | Checks failed | Read the failures and fix them |
| Resolve Conflicts | Main changed the same code you did | Update from main and resolve the conflicts |
| Ready to Merge | Checks passed | Nothing. It opens the pull request on GitHub, unless you've switched its default to **Merge** and GitHub allows you to merge |
| Draft PR | The pull request is still a draft | Nothing. Mark it ready for review on GitHub |
| Merged | The pull request is merged | Nothing. You're done |
| PR Closed | The pull request was closed without merging | Nothing |

Hover over the pill to see your branch name, how far ahead or behind main it is, and when it was last checked. It checks again after every agent turn, whenever you come back to the window, and every few minutes.

## Choosing the default action

Some states have a menu next to the label, headed **Choose the default action**. Choosing an option runs it straight away, and the pill remembers it for next time.

* **Create PR** or **Push to Main**, for a branch with no pull request. The default is **Create PR**.
* **Open in browser** or **Merge**, for a pull request that's ready. The default is **Open in browser**. If GitHub won't let you merge yet, for example because a review is required, the pill opens the browser either way.
* **Upload Changes**, when checks failed and you have changes that aren't on GitHub yet.

On a team, keep **Create PR**: it's the safer choice. See [Push to Main](/handoff/create-a-pull-request#push-to-main).
